Midgar Premium Flies, Tied to Fish... and they are all tied according to Dag Midtgard`s strict fly tying standards.
Dag Midtgard started to tie his own flies at the age of 9. In the beginning it was flies for his home river full of grilse and a few salmon, or for the rown trout in the mountain lakes in the western part of Norway. However, as he soon realised that flash and tinsel also worked great for blackfish and cod, and that the sea-trout also like flies in saltwater, he has gained a lot of experience in tying flies that fish, and, that last! While studiying at the University of Oslo, he work part time as a fly-tyer and student, and here he made the foundation of his later professional life. Since 1996 he has worked full time with fly fishing in flyfishing stores, and since 2001, he started his own flyfiishing store. It is this long experience with flytyng and flyfishing and good contact with avid flyfisher customers that, constantly giving constructive feedback and asking for new patterns, that has lead to the outstanding qualities of his flies today.
The starting of his own shop lead to a much higher demand for his flies than he could anticipate, and he soon realized that he could not cope with the demand. Therefore, in the year of 2005, he started his own flytying workshop in Kenya. He spent 9 months of teaching and explaining his life-long fly-tying experience to already clever flytyers at his workshop, and gradually they acquired his thoughts behind how flies must be tied to fish. Tied to fish is therefore the core element in all Midgar Flies. Not only are they tied to fish, but are also tied to last! What is more irritating than seeing your fly fall apart in the middle of a hatch or in the middle of the run of either salmon or steelhead? Since 2005 his flytying workshop has grown from 6 full time employees to 23 full time employees in 2011, all of whom is tying premium flies for trout, steelhead, atlantic salmon and numerous saltwater species.
Craftmanship alone does not make the flies. In addition to flytying experience, know-how and skill, the materials used to make the flies are very important. Since Dag Midtgard has been working in the flytying business since 1987, he knows who makes good thread, who manufactures the best hooks, as well as the other important ingredients that make his flies outstanding. However, what you will notice on most of his flies for atlantic salmon and steelhead, are the way the flies moves. The movement is very easy to see, and the wiggle you see in all his hair-winged flies, make the important difference. The more the fly wiggles and moves naturally in the water, the more it attracts the fish, which again means many grabs, a lot of fun and hopefully many released fish during the day for the fisherman.
The secret behind the wiggle for the fly is how the wing are tied, but also what it is made of. Every year Dag Midtgard travels one week to select the very best hair wing materials for his fies. All these hair wing materials are sold in the web shop under the label “Midgar Premium Hair”. Regardless of what you are looking for, long, short, stiff or curly hair, in natural or dyed colors, all these materials are easily available here at midgarflyfish.com. All materials used to tie the flies are listed as “Related Products” for the flies, and by clicking on the button “Related Products” a product listing of all materials used to tie the fly you are looking at will be displayed in the 4x1 photo-strip at the bottom of the web page at midgarflyfish.com.
